5 Gift Ideas for the Snowbird in Your Life

Buying gifts for geezers is tough.  They already have everything.

Geezer guys are retired and have no further need of an annual white dress shirt and silk tie, which is bloody inconvenient, really. Geezer gals won’t thank you for another cookbook or tchotchke to clutter their decor, since either they’ve downsized, redecorated and have no room or still have such an accumulation of stuff that they have no room.  Oh, and they already own a yoga mat and the boxed set of Downton Abbey, Seasons 1-3. Another bad Christmas sweater might just get you written out of the will, especially if you make the mistake of buying it in Extra Large, even if that’s what they actually wear.  It seems to suggest that your giftee needs an Extra Large, which is dangerous territory. Don’t go there. Better to buy a Medium that you know they’ll need to exchange.  Sure you can give them wine or chocolates instead, but you lose points for lack of imagination.

Buying gifts for snowbirds can be tougher still because not only are they geezers who already have everything, they’re also geezers who are leaving right after the holidays.  They can’t pack anything bulky or heavy to take with them for months of sunshine while you stay home to shovel their driveway.  It has to be small and light enough to fit under an airplane seat, even if they are driving.

So what to get that hard-to-buy for snowbird in your life?

Here are five holiday gift giving ideas, at various price points:

Best of all, make a charitable donation. The Salvation Army helps so many people and are one of the ones you KNOW your donation is going to the needy, not to a CEO's 6-figure salary or administration or fundraising costs. It's going to those who need your help. No wrapping required either!
