Here’s something you might want to try on your next visit to Siesta Key: paddleboard yoga.
Yes, that’s right. Yoga on a paddleboard, out on the warm waters of Sarasota Bay. Talk about a fun way to break out of a fitness rut or just plain enjoy a relaxing hour outside in the sunshine!
What could be more blissful than being out on the water? Feeling the waves beneath you and the warm Gulf breeze caressing your skin sounds like a perfect antidote to the stresses of everyday life. Add some gentle stretching and breathing exercises, using the paddleboard as your floating yoga mat, and you have a recipe for perfect contentment. Paddleboard yoga builds strength in the shoulders, legs and core and also enhances flexibility and stability. It is a growing phenomenon enjoyed around the world, including Toronto. But as a renowned klutz, if I’m going to fall off my paddleboard, I’d prefer being dunked in the bathtub warm Gulf of Mexico than in Lake Ontario.
Ami at Outdoor Adventures in Yoga says that paddleboard yoga is suitable for all levels of both yoga and paddleboard experience, though you do need to be able to swim, in the event you, errr, are as uncoordinated as I am and unexpectedly find yourself a bit wet.
Classes are weather permitting and you do need to call ahead to reserve a board. Find out more at www.outdooradventuresinyoga.com.
